Tornado Watch Until 10 PM

Good afternoon bloggers,

There is a Tornado Watch now in effect until 10 PM.  Kansas City is right down the middle of this watch and thunderstorms are forming:

Kansas City is suddenly in the more dangerous spot for severe thunderstorm development as the warm front is now near the KC metro area.  We will be monitoring this closely and we will be on 41 Action news and streaming on Facebook and on KSHB.com if anything does develop.  Here is the 2 PM surface map:

Let us know what you experience and I will check in when I get a chance.  Thank you bloggers for helping!

Gary

Had about .6” of rain with this storm. Still so thankful that it stayed aloft and did not drop until it passed us. Mosby is about 5 miles due East of my location. It appears that the storm had split into two separate tornadoes. That is what I witnessed as there was what appeared as rotation forming to my north and the beginning of rotation that I captured to my west. I am thankful but also feel bad for those directly impacted. Also thankful for all of the news stations for their coverage. It was necessary and spot on. I… Read more »

Less than 1/3 inch here, just about the perfect amount of rain around my area this month well timed. However we’re definitely dealing with swollen rivers from runoff up north. I think St Joseph only had 6-9 inches of rain this month and no hail either. We’ve been spared the worst and I hope we continue to get well timed rains if and after if the farmers can ever plant crops

I was chasing the storm just as the tornado dropped when I was south and west of Eudora… headed up toward the Desoto area and were in good position to see it. It was just so rain wrapped it looked like you pretty much had to be in its path and facing to your west as the storm approached you to see it. Very exciting chase, but so sad to hear about places like south of Lawerence and Linwood.. prayers go out to anyone impacted.

A quick check in…as I have always said I live between Lone Star and Clinton Dam….we got so lucky…we heard as it went over head but it was not on the ground at that exact time….we have trees down and flooding but nothing too rough…however significant damage from here to 458 and Iowa…rows of trees look like an airplane with a bush whacked flew over and then the poor folks at 458 and 59 just 1/4 mile south of Lawrence city limits….I personally am so lucky but others in my area are not…I feel terrible for everyone….just a terrible night… Read more »

Bill, I am a fellow teacher and have always enjoyed your posts. The fact that you checked in with us on this blog is not only what makes you so special, but what helps make this blog a special community. Glad you are alright, and I’m praying for those folks who weren’t so lucky tonight.

Glad you are well Bill. I thought about you this morning so wanted to check and see if you posted anything. I’m south of the East side of Lone Star by about 2 miles. Missed us to the Northwest and hadn’t got it’s act together as much yet. Feel pretty lucky, but am hurting for all those affected. My Subaru guy was one who had his house damaged and was on the news. Just absolutely terrible.

Who knew there were a few teachers on here? I’m one too, and was thinking that I’d go out soon to see if anyone needed help — does anyone have any information on whether or not outsiders would even be let in to areas affected as of this morning?

Downloaded the Storm Shield app today. Got the tornado watch alert earlier in the day, but nothing else after.
I live in Olathe and the sirens were going off but no app alert.

That app is very hit and miss with the weather alerts. The 1weather app does a better job, sometimes too good a job.

If I’ve done my math correctly, we are now at 12.81″ for the month, making this the wettest May on record!

That was too close. I am north of Liberty between Liberty and Kearney, right by I-35, They cancelled the tornado warning and I was watching the storm. I noticed a southward movement of an area of the storm and a bit of lowering in the clouds with rotation. It did not touch down in my area, but I went to the basement. We have a storm shelter that is all concrete so I couldn’t even hear the wind. It passed and when I looked east you could see the big cluster of the storm as it was heading towards Mosby… Read more »

those storms out west are more than likely going to track north of kc, and i don’t think anything will form behind them.

I think the storm fell apart when it encountered rain cool air from this mornings storms. At 1:45 PM there was a distinct boundary right in the path of the tornado where it started to weaken.

We had .95″ of rain, almost no wind whatsoever. Pretty surprising given that we appeared to be in the target zone. We went into the basement based on the projected storm track.

Appreciate the concern. 🙂

I think the cells near Wichita would be our chance for the majority of the metro…unless it turns into a linear event.

Looks like it’s forming into a squall so the MAJOR tornado threat is over, but you could still have a spin-up on those lines as we’ve seen a lot of.

Missed me to the south here in a lawrence. I have to say this felt like the day for it. Even thought it was cloudy, the day started with sun, no winds, and became humid enough for drizzle at 80 degrees. The thunder as the cell moved in was different than anything I’ve heard for a long time. Please be safe if you’re in the path.
