Record Breaking Arctic Outbreak

Good morning bloggers,

IMG_6909

Sunny The Weather Dog is not sure she wants to go outside this morning.  Schools are closed this morning in response to the Arctic outbreak this morning. It has dropped to way below zero over many spots this morning. The Arctic high pressure area is now moving into northern Missouri as you can see below:

2

Later this afternoon a thin band of snow is likely going to form and track near Kansas City. The exact track will be determined in a few hours, so we will be monitoring this closely.  Kansas City will be near the edge of this fast moving little disturbance as you can see on this next map:

3

A rather major shift in the pattern is predicted for this weekend. A surface cyclone will be forming over Nebraska by Sunday afternoon. This storm will draw in Gulf of Mexico moisture and temperatures will be forced to rise into the 60s over parts of the plains, and 60 degree air is likely going to reach up to KC by Sunday.  Even without rain, the ground will likely saturate due to the moisture increase and much warmer temperatures which will  force the humidity to reach 100% and the roads will likely become wet by Saturday.

1

This storm will miss KC with snow spreading over the northern plains and Rocky Mountains.  Who is looking forward to this warm up. Bundle up this morning. Have a great start to your day and join in the conversation at Weather2020.com as we share in this weather experience.

Gary

-10 this am in STJOE far cry from all time records in -20s .. we had this cold for almost all of Jan last year and four or five years ago. still -2 at 4pm .. i know we just got a glancing blow of the cold … waiting for the wet cycle of LRC to come back at the start of Mach … still crusty 1-3 in of snow on ground and a skiff of new powder…

Had a nice burst of snow this afternoon before the warmer air arrives for the weekend and a much calmer pattern will set up, thank goodness we get a break for a bit.

Looks like its beginning to pass east of Metro. Is this supposed to be all of the snow for this area? I was under the impression this was supposed to start closer to rush hour. Just want to make sure “the worst is over”….

There is some congealing/back building to the NW but that likely stays North of KC. I would say this is actually ending.

thetophat

Wonder if the dew point is rapidly rising and causing all the moisture to essentially squeeze out of the atmosphere as well. I thought we may get a brief dusting today NEVER this full blown event………..

Well if it doesnt back-build to the west, this will be over pretty quick from my untrained eyes,

It appears to me there is a push of warmer air overrunning this extremely cold, dense airmass. In spring and summer this causes very heavy rain. Absolutely amazing this is happening.

This reminds me of that awful pair of winters 2009-11 where every little bump in the atmosphere seemed to produce. How in the World KC is not in a WWA is way beyond me. This is energizing right over the city…………

What do you think of the Kentucky Governor saying the U.S. is getting “soft” closing schools due to the cold? I think some politicians need to eat their words. When my kids are in school and temperatures drop enough to have frostbite set in within 30 minutes or less is nothing to bat an eye at. Who knows if that Governor even had to walk to school or wait for a bus. Just my two cents.

sierravista

Do think we’re getting soft. People no longer know how to dress their kids for the cold. I grew up in Minneapolis and walked to school every day and took my younger sister with me, no matter the temperature or snow. Both my mom and dad worked, so they were not home to take us or pick us up in the afternoons. We would skate on the lakes even when the temp was 0 degrees or below, go into the warming house afterward. That governor has a northern mentality!

We are getting VERY soft. Eventually we will close school for rain or the sun being to bright!

The temperature dropped to -2° here (25 miles north of Manhattan) and to 1° in Manhattan. Got late morning snow flurries that left a dusting. It is currently 5° and overcast, but the sun is shining bright enough to make distinct shadows.

Does this really qualify as an arctic blast or just a shot of quick cold air (outbreak)?

Not for a blast which I believe is defined as lasting several days.

I am so excited to look at the long range forecasts . . . all I see is some warm-ups followed by some brief shots of cold air, followed by warm-ups. So glad there is no snow pack to allow this cold to linger. As we turn the page into February, I can finally start to see spring at the end of the tunnel minus the one or two light snows we’ll likely get in between.

Heat Miser

Actually, Gary thinks we could get a good snow storm or two. But I’m all for the warming parts in between snow storms.

It was a crisp -26 with a windchill of -51 when I was coming into work this morning up in Iowa. Tonight the winds will die down but that will allow the temperature to plummet to -32. The record cold for my city is -29. So all-time record cold in eastern Iowa!

NWS in St Louis showing up to 1” near Jefferson City. Advisory issued from 3:00 PM till midnight for my local area. Indicating snow could start mid afternoon & make for a slick evening commute for the Jefferson City & Columbia areas.

It looks like there is some snow to the NW on radar and could be in the KC area in a few hours. How much we get is up in the air, but consensus seemed to be dusting to an inch. Higher side to the NE of metro.

Looking at the models, it looks like we’re in that pattern where there is some sort of snow predicted about 10 days out, but it’s always about 10 days out.

Seems they’re setting train tracks on fire in Chicago to keep the trains running. https://theweek.com/speedreads/820665/chicago-train-tracks-have-literally-set-fire-keep-trains-running-amid-recordbreaking-cold

They r making that into a big deal. We do that alot in the winter but they are exaggerating the story because of the cold.

Interesting. I had never heard of it before, but it makes sense, seems like a good way to keep things running.

question: what factors determine how much frost occurs, if any, overnight? there was literally no frost on my car this morning. with such cold temps and no frost, I was wondering what it takes? any thoughts are appreciated!
