Arctic Blast Arrives This Afternoon: Wind Chill Warning Just North Of KC

Good morning bloggers,

An Arctic Blast will arrive this afternoon as the cold front/Arctic front moves through. It will warm up into the 20s just ahead of it later this morning and then it is blast away.

12

11

10

The wind chills will be ridiculously cold, record breaking cold over parts of Iowa-South Dakota-North Dakota-Minnesota-Wisconsin-Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan by Wednesday morning.  Kansas City will be on the edge of this record breaking cold air mass, and then it will retreat north by Friday.  In fact, a huge warm up is likely this weekend with highs reaching into the 50s with a chance of 60s by Sunday night or Monday.  Who is ready for Spring?

14

The Polar Vortex will lift northeast and by Saturday a series of storm systems will break into the western United States.

Kansas City Weather Timeline:

  • This morning:  Periods of clouds with a high of 24°
  • This afternoon: Temperatures dropping into the teens with the wind increasing from the northwest at 15-30 mph.  Wind chills down to near zero.
  • Tonight into early Wednesday:  Temperatures fall to below zero with -2° to -7° likely by morning. The wind will continue in the 10 -20 mph range creating wind chills of -25° to -15° near KC and colder farther north.

Bundle up and get ready for this blast. In our area it is impressive, but not ridiculous. The areas to the north are truly going to get a record breaker.  For KC, we will set our eyes on the weekend warm up and next weeks chance of storm systems soon. Have a great day and thank you for sharing in this weather experience featuring Weather2020 and the LRC.

Gary

Can someone help me understand how the meteorologists are predicting a dusting to 2” tomorrow? I’m fairly new at watching the weather models but i feel like I don’t see anything showing that kind of snow event in tomorrow’s forecast.

I guess the mail will come tomorrow after all?

For the Metro, yes

Wow just heard on news all postal services cancelled for tomorrow in KS and MO.

Also saw a reporter in Minneapolis outside who had goggles on. She said it is because corneas can freeze ! Who knew !?
I think it is ludicrous in those temps to have any reporter standing outside to report that it is COLD outside 🙄

What? I thought neither hail nor sleet nor snow, etc, etc. will stop the postman from completing his rounds. Wimpification of America?

Andrew

It was fake news. They sent notice to kshb stating no mail in KS/MO but have since retracted that. There will be limitations on picking up pkgs etc and some parts of both states will not get mail. But the metro will

I’m enjoying the balmy low 40’s here in south central Kansas. This is going to be an average late January cold blast here.

How come some mets are mentioning a dusting to 2″ of snow possible tomorrow (Wednesday), but I see nothing of it here and nothing on the NWS?? Maybe I am just missing something.

Each school district is different, but here in Kirksville School is canceled if the windchill is below -30 F. Last year we had cold temperatures, but the wind chill wasn’t that cold. We’re expecting school to be canceled if Gary’s forecast of -38 windchill comes true.

I have a friend who works with KDOT. He is out patching potholes on I-35. Patching and re-patching holes they already patched last week. Cold patch does not last. Have to wait for warmer temps to hot patch. They might be out there again tomorrow.
Man I feel for anyone who has to be out in the elements ! That goes to Stl on here too, repairing busted rails. Hats off to you guys !!

Are the school closing regulations different in Missouri than Kansas it seems Missouri does close more often maybe they just get more snow

Grambo624
Guest
Grambo624

Missouri and Kansas have different criteria. I dont know what the threshold is in Missouri, but if they dont reach a certain % of attendance, it doesnt count as a school day, hence why they close more.

Excluding the record breaking cold off to our east, isn’t this cold blast similar to January 2018? I recall two zero to below zero stretches of cold last year. At least this one appears to be short lived.

Hoping all my farm animals make it through this next blast of cruddy winter weather.

Thank God for global warming or it might be 50 below in spots, shattering the old records by 20 degrees.

LOL hear you on the Global Warming thing. Love Trump’s tweet!

“In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!”

Is it global warming, climate change, global cooling??? I assuming it is th opposite of the current weather!

snowflakeparkville
Guest

Think of it not was “warming” but as adding energy to the atmosphere. Usually this manifests as warmth, but it also can just generally make the weather more “crazy” and volatile.

Sorry, that was sarcasm! Man-made “climate change” is a hoax. Want more grant money? Research climate change and the give the givers of money the “facts” they want… get more money!!!

We have documented higher levels of atmospheric carbon than ever recorded in man existence. To think there was once a sea over all of Kansas, DUH the climate is always changing with or without Man. But, you must consider what impact we are also g to the equation. The climate always changed, but with the fossil fuels we burn it has changed the equation from a naturally occurring to a rapidly accelerating snowball. We are dealing with forces we do not entirely understand, to tread cautiously would be wise when considering the decisions we make now could impact fate of… Read more »

There is still no evidence that rises in CO2 are the cause of Global Warming. As matter of fact very recent studies trying to better understand the increase in CO2/CH4 after the last ice age was recently evaluated using new ice cores from WAIS Divide Core samples from 2011. Their determination was the opposite of common man-made global warming. That the rise in temperature— increases the CO2/CH4– not the other way around. It was also determined temperature changes at the end of the last ice age created a lagged CO2 and CH4 uptick that took nearly 400 YEARS to be… Read more »

There have been as many studies found to be flawed as there are those that are “real” when the blame falls on man made climate change. If we all believed the hype from Al Gore and his teams, when they first started spouting the dangers the world would be in tatters right now. I was a senior in high school in NE Iowa mid January 1982. We got snowed into another small town for two days with temps between -25 to -30 with wind chills at -60. It set records, we just didn’t all go off the deep end claiming… Read more »

Paul, you are on a weather and meterology website, I would have thought you would know the difference between weather and climate.

The world is getting warmer on average around the globe combined. Just because TODAY is colder doesn’t mean the YEAR as a whole isn’t warmer. You have to take it all into consideration. Weather is what is happening now, climate is weather collected together over long periods of time.

Paul
Guest

Never said climate is not changing, just saying man has little to do with it.

97% of climate scientists believe humanity is at least partially responsible for climate change. I think I’m going to side with them. At this point, NOT believing in human-made climate change is at best a conspiracy theory. NASA has an entire section of their website dedicated to educating the public about this, for crying out loud.

Ben

Haha, on a post that quotes statistics and facts about climate from the world’s climate experts, my upvote-to-downvote ratio is currently at negative 2. There is a reason my generation and the one below me have lost faith in right-wing ideology. This stuff is important to us since we are the ones who get to live with the fallout. I’m extremely bummed that we continually elect officials who deny climate change exists, even when their own governmental experts who research this stuff for a living hand them contradictory data.

He just put it in the blog:

Tonight into early Wednesday: Temperatures fall to below zero with -2° to -7° likely by morning. The wind will continue in the 10 -20 mph range creating wind chills of -25° to -15° near KC and colder farther north.

Gary NWS has issued a wind chill advisory for dangerously cold wind temps tomorrow. How often has this happened?

Numb3rsGuy
Guest
Numb3rsGuy

Mr. Pete,

Wind chill advisories are issued for wind chills below -20, and wind chill warnings are issued for wind chill values below -30. This usually happens a day or two each winter in KC.

Grambo624
Guest
Grambo624

Wind Chill Advisories are Wind Chills of 0 to -17 for at least an hour. A Warning is -18, and lower.
