Winter Storm Warning…..Update on Heavy Snow Band Moving In

Good evening bloggers,

Here comes a band of heavy snow. The snowfall rates may reach one to two inches per hour.    And, I just updated the snowfall forecast, tweaking it up a bit.

This is a quick update, as it has been busy here in the forecast center.  I will check in later.

Whoa! The blog (mobile) got an upgraded look this morning. Nice!

I just measured almost 8″ in east Independence, MO.

Snow coming down lightly in Parkville. 4 inches uniformly on everything. Grass, cars, pavement, everything.

snowing heavy in Brookside. Probably 6″ on the ground. Gary nailed it.

Actually add another 1/2″ of snow on top of those totals so 7″ on grass now w/ current snow coming down at about 2/3″ per hr rate.

Measured again fellas. 1.5-2” in the driveway. And found a high spot on my deck at 4”.

There ya go! It’s the elevated surfaces that got the most snow.

Here in Lenexa I had 2.75″ in the driveway but 5.5-6″ on deck, 6.5″ on grass. The 9 inch total earlier was wrong I was eye balling it. But still good snow!

We get it. You received less snow than everyone else. We don’t need to keep hearing about it. You’re location is obviously an exception. Continuously talking about it just sounds like a child whining.

Man when are we going to get backyard forecast…this forecast was obviously a bust, when my backyard doesn’t get what was predicted it doesn’t matter if others got it…JK!! Good forecast Gary and team

I also had about 7″ in eastern Lees Summit.

Here in SOP (123rd/Antioch) I easily have 6-7″ and it’s just started snowing again – light to moderate snowfall. Can tell the snow is wet and heavy. Beautiful waking up to the snow cover this morning though!

Joshua is in a minuscule snow donut hole that no one else in kc is experiencing. It’s literally amazing cause the other 2.2 million people of kc have 5-10 inches.

You can send pictures to Gary or any of the other mets on their facebook or twitter.

Easily 7+ at 143rd & Antioch. Betting Gary got the same 1.5 miles away.

Gary nailed this forecast. Now he can enjoy it for a day and then start on the next storm.

Just measured 7 inches inches in Eastern Indep (291 &I70). Haven’t seen a snowstorm around here for quite a few years.

Our neighbor here in south JocCo lost a huge portion of one of his trees under the weight of this heavy wet snow.

Joshua Sounds like he’s actually got 3″+ but just has to be right about his call last night so his total his suddenly paltry. Sorry shot caller, Gary nailed this storm. You have 3″ at least, stop fabricating your story bro. Keep it REAL

Joshua, if u end up with about 5 inches, isn’t that on the low end of the forecast prediction? Who cares about right or wrong, I told u so, na na na boo crap. Get shovel and push your few inches off or wait for it to melt I don’t care and get ready to watch some football. Good luck today and have a nice wknd!

You must have read my post wrong. I am saying there is no way my location is getting another 2-3” today. Currently 1.5” accumulation. Not really even worth shoveling my driveway lol.

Guest
Stl78(winon,mn)

U also said 2.75 on your deck. Either way, no sense in arguing. I don’t really care. Btw u guys are probably sitting at about the same snowfall for the winter as us in Minnesota. I’ve received about 15 inches thus far and we are 14 in below avg for the season. Good “luck”to your chiefs today!

Ha is that a joke? Didnt even get 2” after 15hrs of snowfall. You think today’s blotchy radar is gonna produce 3”?? Temps just too warm in my neighborhood.

A band of moderate to heavy snow is just south of KC and moving north. This is rotating around the main storm and another 1” to 2” may fall between now and 1 pm. The main roads have been plowed. The secondary roads around your neighborhoods are slick and snow packed. https://twitter.com/glezak/status/1084088896990994432/photo/1

Should b about right for u then. U will probably receive an additional 2 to 3, which would give u 4.75 to 5.75. that seems reasonable.

I was absolutely right. Just measured a whopping 1.5” in the driveway in Western Shawnee. Time to eat crow Heat Miser. FYI about 2.75” measured on my deck and grassy surfaces.

Unfortunately for you, you were one of the outliers with lower totals. Most areas got 5-8 inches, but some isolated areas like yours go more in the 3-inch area. Sucks, but that’s how it is with snowstorms sometimes.

Joshua

Joshua

1.5” btw not 3”. I said at 8pm last night there was no way my location would see more than 2-3” and Heat and Gary were implying how dumb of a statement that was. Guess I was right after all.

I guess I should explain what i mean. You said you measured 2.75 on the deck. How is that not “in the area of 3-inches”? You need to enjoy things more instead of going woe is me when something doesn’t line up perfectly. Did you get missed during the blizzard too?

Driveway and snow berm shoveled. Tips on snow shoveling by hand. When you get to the street portion where the high berms are, shovel in levels to avoid a trip to the ER. Don’t be a hero. After living in Alaska and Utah, I have hand shoveled my fair share.

Temps at my house are already above freezing, seeing a bit of ice that formed on the pipes outside dripping. I’d say about 6 inches on the ground.

It appears adding location next to name just puts you in moderation. Try again. Gardner, KS: 5 inches on pavement. 8 on a car that was parked all day yesterday and overnight. Snow is heavy, elm trees are losing limbs all around me.

Reporting 8.2” in Southern tip of Lee’s Summit Near Longview Lake! Absolutely a gorgeous snow with the snow sticking to the trees and everything in between. Gary was right on the mark with the forecast. It’s still snowing; however, not as hard. Can’t wait for the sun to rise! Go Chiefs!

To my hobbyist eye, it looks like the HRRR has had the best handle on the precip pattern, especially with the precip about to shut off from the SW for a while.

This is the forecast made 2 hrs ago for 6am:

http://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=hrrr&p=ref1km_ptype&rh=2019011210&fh=2&r=us_c&dpdt=&mc=

Here is the (Kuchera) predicted snow accum between 4am and this evening:

http://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=hrrr&p=snku_acc&rh=2019011210&fh=18&r=us_c&dpdt=&mc=

We grouse about models all the time but it’s pretty dang amazing that fluid dynamic equations can be used to forecast this kind of thing with such precision.

f00dl3
Guest
f00dl3

I think what’s interesting is not necessarily that the model had the timing right on anything but it had the moisture / snowfall right. It’s almost like the storm “caught up” to expectations once temps allowed the snow to stick. The HRRR saw the forest but not the trees.
