30-40 Degrees Above Average

Good Sunday bloggers,

We are tracking a storm system racing through the western USA. It will move through our region tonight with a chance of rain and quite a bit of wind and temperatures nearly 40 degrees above average!

The system is now racing through the southwest USA, grabbing moisture from the El Nino warmed waters of the south Pacific Ocean.

7

SUNDAY 3 PM: It will be windy, cloudy and mild with highs in the mid 50s. The sun will shine through the thick cirrus clouds from time to time. Altostratus, mid level clouds, will increase as well and the sun will not shine through those clouds.

1

SUNDAY 6 PM-MIDNIGHT: It will be windy and mild with a chance of rain showers, especially from I-35 and points east.

2

MONDAY AROUND 7 AM: The rain will be moving away as south to southwest winds gust to 30-35 mph. Rainfall totals will be a trace to .25″, most east. But, here is the crazy thing. Look at the temperatures near 60°. The average low is 20°, so tomorrow morning will be around 40 degrees above average.

3

MONDAY 7 AM-NOON: The sky will clear and temperatures will drop a few degrees as the wind shifts to the west at 10-20 mph.

4

MONDAY AFTERNOON: It will be sunny with much less wind. Temperatures will rise back to 55-60.

5

CHIEFS SATURDAY, 1/12: We have been saying that there is the potential of a storm system in the region around this day. The new data has anything but that solution, or does it? Look closely as there is a snow system in Chicago and a rain system along the Gulf coast with cold air lurking in the northern Plains.  The data has the systems in two pieces and weak. This is still 6 days away and needs to be monitored closely as we could see a rapid change in the data as we get closer. We will be looking to see if these systems can consolidate or one becomes stronger. If this happens, they will incorporate the cold air and we will have a much different solution.

10

Have a great week.

Jeff Penner

We just need to keep hoping for regular periods of rain. Otherwise this warm weather will be miserable when it becomes Hot this summer!

Agree about the rain, but that’s a 50/50 proposition-mild winter does not necessarily mean hot summer.

Gary,
Winter so far not much to write home about, let’s see what happens this next weekend, and February and March.

One event early, that was it. Three or four snows in November typically results in a snowy winter. We had about 4” with the blizzard storm, it wasn’t bad but for a few hours. It’s apparent things have changed somewhat, warmer for sure, one storm since Nov 5th if my memory serves me right.

So what’s everyone’s take? Let’s say it does snow Saturday during game. Help the chiefs or hurt the Chiefs? I’m of the believe bad weather usually makes games closer. And favors defense and running game, although one could make an argument it helps receivers too with DB’s struggling keep up on routes. I guess this is a weather question.

I’m confused by your statement “it was not a snowy winter this Nov”. How many inches above avg did u end up being?

Penner and Gary banking on LRC magic next weekend. I mean if the LRC says it’s so then stay strong on the forecast, if we have learned anything it’s models beyond 6 days are worthless. Now I would like to know why it doesn’t happen, if it doesn’t. If it’s because of ElNino then perhaps ElNino goes on the graph where the LRC used to be. Throughout history a snowy November was a great indicator for a snowy winter. It was not a snowy Nov this year. The tone has been set, the pattern is showing, it’s going to stay… Read more »

FV3-GFS showing several inches of snow in the Ozarks Saturday & even an 1-2” up into central MO. Hope this shifts a little further north & other models jump on board. Still some hope!!

In KC’s 130-year weather record, there have been only 11 lows of 50F or higher in January, the most recent being in 1990. This will be #12.

Ahh, but will it stay above 50 Monday evening? What usually happens, we have a warm overnight low and then a cold front moves through dropping temperatures later in the day. Has to stay above 50 for the full 24 hour period to count.

Wichita sits at a measly 3.7 inches of snow. Oklahoma City has 5.5. I believe that this would mark the 6th straight year that they receive more if this holds. I believe December 2014 (maybe February 2015) was the last time Wichita received 3+ inches of snow from a single storm. Sigh. But I digress. I really do like the mild weather. I don’t need or want any more cold snaps without snow attached!!

The fact that the Chiefs are only a five point favorite at home should tell you something.

Where did these spotty showers come from this morning? Not in the forecast.

It’s been said here before but may I suggest again-when you post your indignation they have succeeded in what they’re trying to do, getting a rise out of you or whoever. Just. Ignore. Them.

I wrote that in jest, but a short while after I wrote it I went outside and, just for the heck of it, looked at the area where I’ve got my crocuses, and to may amazement, guess what indeed has started poking above the ground?

Why do you care so much about the Chiefs losing to the Colts? Are you a Colts fan or a Chiefs hater? Does it even matter to you what the Chiefs do or are you just trolling at this point?

It appears we are looking at another KC winter bust. Will we even reach the 10 inch mark this winter. Let alone have another 3 inch “blizzard” this year.

Winter is not over, but so far all indications are this winter was another major bust. *sigh*

Who would have forecast this apparent 180 in terms of winter after the early snowy start. Not sure what cycle 3 will bring. I’d thought my lower snowfall prediction was in jeopardy but now just perplexed by what happens rest of the winter.

Could change, might even snow some Sat but I dont think we have to worry about the”blizzard” some were so excited about a few days ago.
