A Look Into Thursday’s Storm: Video Blog Today

Good morning bloggers,

A big warm up is in progress right now as temperatures jump into the 50s.  The warmest temperature so far in December has only been 52 degrees. We should exceed that number today.   Last December it had already reached 72 degrees in December, and last winter was not a warm one either.  There is a storm system approaching the area by Thursday and there are still a lot of questions.  Let’s take a look at today’s video:

The Kansas City Weather Timeline:

  • Today:  Sunny and warmer. A southwest breeze increasing from 10-25 mph.  High:  54°
  • Wednesday:  A few high clouds and a bit cooler. High:  50°
  • Thursday:  A 70% chance of rain.  Tailgating will have a 70% chance of drizzle or rain. It will be cold with temperatures in the 30s.  The wind will be increasing from the northeast at 10-20 mph.
  • Thursday Night Football:  Rain ending and possibly mixed with snow.  Cold with temperatures in the 30s and a northeast breeze at 10-20 mph.

Jeff showed Venus this morning, the closest planet to earth. Did you know that Venus was the first planet, beyond earth, that was visited by a spacecraft and landed on successfully, which happened in 1970? It is the closest planet to earth, has a 225 day year (earth has a 365 day year). One day on Venus lasts around 116 of our days due to a very slowly rotating planet. I just wanted to provide a little info on our closest planet, and this is why it is the brightest object in our sky. It is not a “star”.  A “star” is a sun, and this is a planet.

Have a great day and thank you for sharing in this weather experience featuring Weather2020 and the LRC.  Go over to the Weather2020 blog to join in the conversation.

I’m growing suspicious. There are two lengths that have been indirectly discussed on this blog. Regardless of which one is used, I don’t see a repetition of the three waves from early October.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that I’m just an idiot looking in the wrong place.

Snowflake,

Your not an idiot…….The LRC is coming into focus and for me, has been a bit of a challenge. With that said, I like what I see thus far

It looks like Thursday’s rain is the only shot in the next 15 days. Bummer the Christmas storm has faded for KC.

18z NAM goes south. That’s about all she wrote. I’m not even sure we get rain out of this, it’s so far south.

I’ve heard the 18z is always way off

Looks to me like the 18z GFS has it a bit colder than before with the 540mb line right on KC.
Question is, though, will there be any precip??

Unless I am reading the different models incorrectly it looks like they are all lining up with rain for Thursday and maybe some into Friday. There is some snow on some of them, but they are all showing some kind of precipitation for Thursday.

For you astronomy buffs this is a fun week: Geminid meteor shower maximizes Thursday night but many per hour visible especially after moonset tonight and tomorrow.

http://www.astronomy.com/observing/sky-this-week/2018/12/the-sky-this-week-from-december-7-to-december-16 The Sky This Week from December 7 to December 16 December 14 Comet 46P/Wirtanen puts on a superb show in mid-December. This periodic visitor currently glows between 4th and 5th magnitude — bright enough to glimpse with the naked eye from a dark site and an easy target through binoculars. Wirtanen made its closest approach to the Sun December 12 and will come closest to Earth on the 16th, when it swoops within 7.2 million miles of our planet. The comet currently resides among the background stars of Taurus the Bull, between the magnificent Pleaides star cluster (M45) and… Read more »

The 10-day forecast for this area (110 miles WNW of KC, straight-line distance) shows 5 of those days will be in the low 50s, with 3 of them 10° above average. The only day that will not be above average is Thursday, and the high then is predicted to be 40° (2 degrees below average); 27° is the predicted low (4 degrees above average) . There is no rain or snow in that 10-day forecast, and I hope that holds true.
It is currently 37° and sunny.

Gary do you ever look at the Navy model? I sometimes look at the Navy model (Navgem) but don’t really know how reliable it is to Mets.

GFS: poof
FV3: 1-2 inches, intensely variable by location
Canadian: dusting-4+ inches, intensely variable by location
NAM: waiting
Euro: poof

I mean were the GFS and Euro ever consistent with snow? I wouldn’t really call it a poof

Gary,
With the current split flow, wouldn’t we need blocking for that artic air to dump south?

While close, studying a few things would suggest that possibility more towards New Years.
